Product Description

Little Gem Magnolia, a dwarf cultivar of Magnolia grandiflora of the Magnoliaceae family, is a striking evergreen tree commonly grown in moderate climates. Originally developed in a North Carolina nursery in the year 1952, the flowering plant has a pyramid-like shape that spread up to 12 feet wide and grows up to 20 to 35 feet in height. The cold hardy Magnolia cultivar flowers heavily for a longer period when grown in warmer regions. It has white, medium-sized flowers that grow as large as 4 to 6 inches.

Planting Instructions

Planting Instructions

The Magnolia “Little Gem” tree should be planted on soil with pH 5.6 to 6.5 and should be spaced between 8 feet to 12 feet between each other.

Magnolia “Little Gem” Spacing

Single Row Spacing

Many homeowners tend to plant trees not only as a windbreak but to create a bit of privacy. Even if this is what the Magnolia “Little Gem” will be used for, ensure that there is a space of 8 feet to 12 feet between each tree for them to grow into healthy plants.

Staggered Row Spacing

The 8 feet to 12 feet requirement between each tree should be maintained when planting the “Little Gem”. Allow around 5 feet between rows to give the roots enough space.

How to Plant your Magnolia “Little Gem”

Once the planting hole is ready, ensure that the tree is in its right directional orientation. The side of the Magnolia “Little Gem” that faced north in its previous site should also face north when planted in the new site.

Put the tree in the prepared hole. Tilt it to the side to put all loose canvas towards the root ball. After that, tilt the tree to the other side to get rid of the fabric.

Fill with soil ensuring that the depth is the same as its previous location.

Water the tree. The tree has average water needs so be sure not to overwater it.

Mulch with compost with a depth of 3 inches. It should be around 3 inches away from the Little Gem’s trunk.
